LIST OF ISSUES
TRAFFIC
As was referred to before, Phillip Edward Alexander has been at the forefront of traffic solutions in the west and has also contributed to the discussions in the neighbouring Diego Martin North East, themselves suffering from a problem similar to ours before the bypass was implemented. The proposed concept for the solution to the Carenage traffic remains an expansion to four lanes in the Point Cumana area up to the existing fish market to allow for the stop and go of vehicles that are themselves responsible for much of the traffic, and the creation of a thord lane all the way to Chaguaramas, being one way heading west until noon, and then reverting to one way heading east until midnight so as to provide a peak time second lane in both directions.
CRIME
As a social activist Phillip Edward Alexander has been lobbying for the social and infrastructural redevelopment of many of the depressed communities throughout Trinidad & tobago, and on that list are some familiar to us in DMW, names such as L’anse Mitan, Big Yard, Scorpion, Vineyard, Abbe Poujade, Richplain, Covigne, Mercer, La Puerta, Bagatelle and Factory road to name a few. Coupled with a zero tolerance approach to guns and illegal drugs, the idea is to use the double pronged approach of honey and vinegar to suppress criminal activity while providing hope and opportunity to those formerly left without choice. These ideas have been discussed at length with a former Minister of National Security with whom he worked closely, and from which a holistic plan is expected to be included in the coming ‘Contract with the People of Diego Martin West.’
HEALTHCARE
With an estimated sixty five thousand souls in the constituency it is well beyond time that Diego MArtin West got its own General Hospital complete with 24 hour accident & emergency and dedicated ambulances distributed throughout the constituency.
FLOODING
Phillip Edward Alexander is also a strong proponent for watercourse expansion and a storm water bypass that would bring an end to Diego Martin being a flood zone once and for all. This project would also bring much needed jobs and one of our conditions for the project is that all skilled and unskilled labor must be sourced first in the Diego Martin Valley and environs.
SOCIAL REDEVELOPMENT
One of the major issues plaguing the constituency is the disconnect and the divide among our dioffernet classes of people. We have a responsibility to the future to build bridges in the present that brings our people together in common cause. To that end we must identify and amplify all the things that unite us, so as to minimize those that divide us.
BUSINESS
Of all the forty one constituencies none has as diverse an impact on the national economy as Diego Martin West does. Present in every sphere of activity, our people have demonstrated an entrepreneurial passion that has resulted in gagrage based businesses now dipping their toes in the global pool.
Our policies must recognize this, our plans must promote it and our programmes must be built with that in mind. From micro-enterprise crucibles to support for the big boys and girls, the issues surrounding markets, labour, the levelling of the play field for state contracts and the creation of DMW projects must sit at the top of the list.
